One of my favorite fashion photographers is Lillian Bassman. She photographed fashion at its peak; capturing the fantasy and mystery of its golden age. Though she was known mostly for her work, between the 1940s and the 1960′s, Bassman worked previously as an illustrator. My favorite photographs from her body of work, have a ethereal, painterly quality and her understanding of lighting and the line of the body are breathtaking.
Bassman’s work couldn’t be more inspiring. Couldn’t you look at these all day? You can read more about Liilian Bassman in this New York Times article and this article from a vintage edition of Popular Photography.
